Consider joining the Special Education Graduate Student Association!  This group, which includes doctoral and master's students, has regular meetings and events.  It is a great avenue for networking and socialization!  Join their Facebook group for more information.

Consider joining GEO, the Graduate Employees' Organization at Illinois.  This is the collective bargaining unit for graduate student employees.  They advocate for graduate students and issues important to them.
