Microteaches

The purpose of the microteach is to give you an opportunity to develop, implement, receive peer feedback on, discuss, and reflect on a teaching plan in your practicum placement.  The microteach process has nine steps.

Step 1: Formulate plan.

  • Review the skill to focus on for your microteach using the provided microteach resources.
  • Review microteach guidelines.
  • Complete the microteach plan using the form provided.
  • Note: On the microteach plan, use pseudonyms or initials for children to ensure confidentiality.

Step 2: Implement plan.

  • Choose a child or group of children.  Get written consent for videorecording using the form provided.
  • Implement plan.
  • Videorecord a minimum of five minutes of the activity.
  • You must plan how you will videorecord in advance, including getting help from others to hold the camera if needed.

Step 3: Prepare and share video.

  • Review the video to ensure the quality (sound, picture) is good.
  • Get technical support if needed (e.g., from peer, practicum leader, or others).
  • Share the video in one file as directed by the practicum leader (e.g., on Moodle or Canvas).

Step 4: Prepare to present.

  • Review your microteach plan, ensuring you have specified what feedback you desire.
  • Make sure you are ready to present your microteach to the class. If necessary, practice ahead of time.

Step 5: Present microteach.

  • Distribute your microteach plan (a copy for each seminar participant) and describe what you will be watching on the video.
  • Specify which aspect(s) of your microteach should be focused on when providing feedback.
  • Watch the video as a group.

Step 6: Receive feedback and have discussion.

  • Each seminar participant writes feedback on the microteach plan.  Feedback should include supportive and constructive components.
  • Have a group discussion about the video and microteach plan.

Step 7: Implement plan using peer feedback.

  • Video record yourself implementing the microteach plan a second time, incorporating the feedback you received in seminar.

Step 8: Write reflection paper.

  • Write a reflection paper, responding to the following questions:
    • What strategies suggested by your peers did you choose to implement and why?
    • How did the children respond to the activity when you used these strategies?
    • What differences did you notice in the overall effectiveness of the activity after applying feedback received from peers?
    • In the future, what might you do differently?
    • How helpful was it to receive feedback from your peers?
  • The paper should be 1-2 pages, double-spaced with 12-point font.
  • Turn in reflection paper to seminar leader.

Step 9: Present microteach.

  • Present the second microteach in seminar.
  • Discuss strategies used during the second implementation of the microteach plan.
